Yet Another Long-held ELC Policy Position – Supporting marriage for everybody.

Even our leaders support it these days, it seems. About time.

Big Food – A short plan for Fidalgo Island.

Here’s a short plan hatched recently … the circumnavigation of Fidalgo Island.

Launch Big Food and three or four other little boats at Washington Park, Anacortes earlier on the morning of October 26. Ride the tide south to Deception Pass, then enter the pass after the tide shifts to a flood. Camp at Hope Island, or somewhere around La Conner.

The next morning, row the Swinomish Slough north (apparently, three out of four tides send the current northbound). Once through, sail west-northwester, past Anacortes and back to Washington Park.

Seems pretty foolproof. Here’s a map of the plan made by Jake Beattie:

Northbound – Under The Narrows

I like this photo a lot. I took it recently under the two bridges at Tacoma Narrows.

The bridge on the right is the new one, on the left, the old one.

ELC Dept. of Peace & Neutrality – Because with doughnuts, we will find commonality.

We have a handful of good doughnut places here in town, though sadly, none here in Lake City.

One is called Top Pot, where they’ve successfully mixed our elitist liberal principals with deep fried dough. The other is Mighty-O, where they’ve introduced the concept of a vegan doughnut to our otherwise conservative food sensibilities.

In doughnuts, man can find commonality.

In other news, I eat about a doughnut a week. I wish there were more weeks in a year.

ELC Yard Parking Enforcement – A visit from The Man.

My neighbor Doug used to park five vehicles in his front yard. It was actually pretty impressive. He had a van, a truck, a blue car, a gold car, and ummmm, a tan car. They covered up every square inch of his yard. But then, his yard parking was cut short by the city of Seattle, who told him that in fact, it’s not okay to cover every square inch of your front yard with vehicles.

Who knew? What will they think of next?

Anyways, Doug was visited again the other morning by parking enforcement. I’m sure they were just stopping by to tell him what a great job he was doing with all of his cars. These days, they’re spread all up and down the street. Doug and the parking meter fellow talked for at least a half hour. The parking meter guy did a lot of gesturing. I’d report more, but I was too busy doing other stuff.

I did take a photo. Here you go.

Still Chasing The Dream – As seen in the family section at Safeco Field.

This fellow caught my eye immediately after I sat down along the edges of the family section at Safeco Field. I’d just gotten a beer, and wanted to relax for a minute before Kerri and I headed back upstairs to our seats.

That’s when I heard him mutter, “oh yeah, well here I go again!”

People began to turn away, and the guy next him moved a few steps down the aisle. But he did not notice. The fellow slipped off his sweatshirt first, then his T-shirt.

“Whoop! Yeah!” His white, dimpled belly hatched from below his T-shirt, which he swung up over and around his head – whoomp, whoomp, whoomp. Whoomp, whoomp, whoomp.

As he swung his shirt, and bellowed at the field, I had time to snap at least four shots with my cell phone. Kerri took a couple more. Most were pretty blurry, but here’s one.

Go M’s.

Big Food – A short trip to Pelican Beach.

My friend Heron and I took the boat to Cypress Island this weekend, leaving around 1 p.m. Sunday. We headed north, from Anacortes, and followed the flood north to a campground at Pelican Beach. We got a bit of a late start, apparently, every motorcyclist within a thousand miles had converged upon Anacortes for the Oyster Run, and we had a tough time getting through town. All we’d really wanted to do was swing by a grocery, buy a filet of salmon and get on our way. Eventually, this happened.

So by the time we left the ramp, the current was booming north. At first we rowed, but then a headwind grew, so we unbrailed the sprit sail and did our best to beat against the wind. The winds grew quickly, from a few mph to around 10 mph, then 15 mph, with whitecaps throwing a bit of spray. Keep reading →
